bath time (hygiene)

bath time for babies is a joyous activity. most babies enjoy ‘swimming’ in their cute little ‘bath tub’.

there’s even a tip I learned on finding a good babysitter for your baby: if the baby is calm when the minder bathes her, it’s a yes..otherwise when the baby is restless or even worse crying when bathed, it’s a sign she’s not the one for your baby

babies need their bath everyday. it’s because they sweat and have milk spill on their faces and clothes.

It’s important to make sure the folds of an especially chubby baby is cleaned as these areas trap dirt and moist, and can irritate baby’s skin. common areas are the neck, armpits, between their elbows and knees, and behind their knees. Another important area to clean is their hands, as babies always clench their tiny hands in a fist, these areas are usually missed during bath time.

We must make sure the baby is well rinsed with clean water before bath time ends. After bathing, it’s very important to let the baby dry well, it’s a good practice to not only pat the baby dry, but to let her air dry before putting on her nappy and clothes.

It’s also a good hygiene practice to clean the baby’s ears (the outer part of the ear) after each bath. remember to always be gentle to your baby and let her enjoy her bath time, and let’s hope the good hygiene will grow on her into adulthood

Tummy time!

Babies need adequate tummy time for stimulation and exercise. It also helps prevent ‘flat headed’ syndrome for babies who sleep on their backs. So, lovely parents out there, go invest on a good play mat for your baby and start having endless fun with your baby during tummy time!

Tummy time is a phrase used to describe the activity of putting a baby on his tummy encouraging the development of back and neck muscles. These large muscles will be used later for crawling. Putting a baby on their tummy also provides a fun way for baby to explore the world around her.
A baby doesn’t need to be on their tummy on a floor or bed to qualify for doing tummy time – putting baby on mommy’s chest (baby’s head aligned with mommy’s neck) is a great way of providing baby with the opportunity to do tummy time while having face-to-face contact with mommy.

nursing cover

breastfeeding in public can be an issue at times. I think it’s perfectly fine for a mother to breastfeed her baby in public, but with some consideration towards other people around her, by covering her breasts from pondering eyes. You can wear special nursing clothes which allow ‘just enough’ opening to nurse your baby. I prefer to use a nursing cover, which does not limit your choice of clothes! There are a lot of nursing covers selling all over the net (or any baby specialty shop)…or better still, you can simply make your own

DIY idea!

If you don’t want to purchase a nursing cover, I recommend you make your own. Simply wrap a shawl over your upper body and nurse your baby discreetly. The baby will be comfortable, so will you. The shawl will also double as a nice blanket for baby, or a pillow, or even a stroller cover (from the bright sun).

here’s another breakfast idea

beat/whisk these ingredients together:

egg

breastmilk (or fresh milk)

salt to taste (optional)

a pinch of cinnamon powder

heat VCO in frying pan

pour the mixture into the pan

when the mixture starts to harden, stir it well (to get chunks of scrambled eggs )

serve on its own or with bread

** you can also add some cheese while stirring in the pan to add some ‘kick’ to the taste

oatmeal porridge

here’s a good idea for breakfast

cook oatmeal
add in breastmilk (or any kind of milk)
brown sugar to taste (optional)
mix well. the amount of milk is up to the thickness of the porridge you want
serve warm

rice porridge

babies love porridge, why not offer them a healthier choice? healthy eating starts early makes babies grow into a good eating habit

cook washed brown rice with loads of water in a pot for 1 hour on low heat (you might need to add up water from time to time)

add in a fish fillet (make sure there’s no bone)

after 15 minutes, stir the fish and rice together until the fish breaks into small pieces

after 30 minutes, add in

vegetables

salt to taste

cook for another 15 minutes

let it cool, serve warm

all together, it takes about 2 hours to cook this porridge. it may take a while, but babies love them so much, so it’s worth the time

mashed potato

here’s one of my easiest baby recipe that is also healthy and most importantly…loved by my baby

boil peeled potatoes until it softens

mash boiled potatoes with:

breastmilk (or infant formula milk)

virgin coconut oil (or unsalted butter)

grated broccoli

serve with your choice of protein – like steamed fish; and don’t forget the veggies – say broccoli

let down reflex

let down reflex is important for breastfeeding mothers. this reflex is needed while pumping milk, so that milk is easier and faster expressed.

let down reflex is when milk gushes out from the breast. it happens when the breast is well stimulated, usually from baby’s suckling on the breast. let down reflex could also be stimulated by the suction of a good breast pump.

some of the ways to ensure this reflex happen each pumping session:

be calm
imagine it’s your baby’s mouth suckling
look at your baby’s picture while pumping

why @ 6 months old

as i researched for information on when to start feeding my baby, i found two school of thought – one saying you should start at 4 months, while another states to start at 6 months old. so, i consulted my wise mother for advice, and she asked me to wait until baby was 6 months old. i never questioned why, i’ve always thought it was because the baby’s tummy wasn’t quite ready for food before he/she is 6 months old. only recently i found out the main reason to wait for baby is at least 6 months old is because at that age his/her tongue is fully developed to swallow food, so he/she won’t choke! i’m glad i waited and didn’t rush into feeding baby too early, besides for an exclusively breastfed baby, 6 months seemed early still…LOL

cute baby contest

our baby wins a consolation prize in a cute baby photo contest..yay! we’re excited about it, and we’re gonna enter him again this year

entering your baby in a baby contest is actually a great experience, do keep in mind it’s not about winning (eventho if u win, it’s an added bonus to the experience), just have fun and cherish the experience.

when your baby grows up, he/she will certainly feel appreciated by the thought that you actually entered him/her in a cute baby contest, it’s a memory he/she can hold on to even when they have no ‘clear’ memory of the actual event..

during the contest, it is a great exposure for our babies, as he/she can meet up with other babies, and we ourselves get to mingle with other parents, sharing parenting tips, ideas and knowledge

i just love dressing up my baby in his cutest, who doesn’t??
and no matter whether my baby wins or not when i enter him in a contest, all that really matters is he is always the cutest baby in our eyes
